March 31, 2023 marked the groundbreaking for the Inwood Detention Basin
March 31, 2023 marked the groundbreaking for the Inwood Detention Basin – a project planned since 2011, when the City of Houston purchased Inwood Forest Golf Course with the idea of turning the property into a regional detention facility.
R.G. Miller | DCCM designed the project from start to finish, beginning in 2017.
When completed in 2025, the project will consist of a series of 12 detention basins with a capacity of 1,200 acre-feet of water or 391 million gallons – relieving as much as 1 foot of flood risk to some 4,400 homes and businesses in northwest Houston.
The project, which is being managed by the Harris County Flood Control District, is funded by $80 million in federal government funds combined with local funds from the city and county.
Recreational amenities, including 12 miles of trails, pocket parks, pedestrian bridges and disc golf courses, are also planned, to be funded through private and other donations.
